Daily Oral Care Programme
Clinically proven to ease the symptoms
and effects of Dry Mouth

Allergies
Could the milk by-products cause any problems for those with milk allergy or lactose intolerance?

•    Although the lipids in our ingredients have been removed, it is technically possible that people with a severe lactose intolerance could experience an allergic reaction.
•    As bioXtra® are oral health products and therefore applied topically, they should not affect the digestive system.

If you are sensitive to milk please check with your doctor or dentist before using bioXtra®.

Bacterial Resistance
Is there a chance that oral bacteria could become resistant to the products?

•    No. bioXtra® products contain only natural ingredients which work to supplement the natural defence systems present in saliva.  Therefore, bacteria cannot become resistant - just as they do not become resistant to natural saliva.

Candida albicans (oral thrush)
Do the bioXtra® products treat Candida?

•    bioXtra® is not a curative treatment, but is recommended as a long-term oral care system to help prevent the build-up of unwanted micro-organisms in the mouth.
•    If Candida (thrush) is already present in your mouth you should ask your dentist or doctor to prescribe medications to eliminate the condition.
•    At the same time bioXtra® products can be safely used in conjunction with any Candida treatments.
•    Once the condition has been eliminated regular use of the bioXtra® products can help to inhibit the re-appearance of Candida by maintaining your mouth\'s natural eco-system.
•    Clinical tests have shown that the bioXtra® active ingredients may be useful in preventing the presence of Candida albicans.

Closing the Tubes
Why should the caps be closed on the packs after use?

•    The enzyme system in bioXtra® products is activated by oxygen.  To prevent any contamination from air it is recommended to replace the cap after each use.

Colostrum Extract
What is the reason for using this ingredient?

•    Colostrum extract contains a mixture of important immune and non-immune factors and other anti-bacterial molecules which help protect health and vitality. These factors form an essential defence system against bacteria, and are an important part of the body’s natural resistance to infection.
•    At the first signs of infection, the body produces immunoglobulins (antibodies) which directly target and attack the responsible microorganisms.
•    In the mouth, immunoglobulins are present in saliva and become activated when there is oral infection.
•    Used as an ingredient in bioXtra®, studies show that Colostrum Extract can help stop unwanted bacteria attaching to the mucous membranes in your mouth, and can promote the mouth’s natural healing processes.
•    bioXtra®’s Colostrum Extract enhances the activity of the other antibacterial agents - Lactoferrin, Lysozyme and the Lactoperoxidase system.
•    The Colostrum Extract in bioXtra® is prepared in our own production plant and forms part of the bioXtra® patented 4-phase system.

Contraindications
Can bioXtra® be used with other medications?

•    bioXtra® can be safely used in conjunction with any prescribed medication.
•    There are more than 1800 commonly used medications which can cause dry mouth.
•    bioXtra® is recommended as daily oral hygiene programme whilst taking such medications, in order to help prevent the short and long-term effects of dry mouth.

Side Effects
Are there are any side effects from using bioXtra?

•    There have been no reported side effects with any of the bioXtra product lines.

Flavourings
Could the flavourings cause allergies or discomfort?

•    bioXtra® products contain mostly natural ingredients which have been carefully selected to be gentle on sore mouths.  This makes them less likely to cause allergic reactions.
•    All the flavourings are essential oils which have been carefully selected because of their known therapeutic benefits.

Fluoride
Why is Sodium Monofluorophosphate used in bioXtra® Toothpaste and Mouthrinse instead of Sodium Fluoride?

•    Studies have shown that the only fluorides compatible with enzyme action are sodium monofluorophosphate and calcium fluoride.

Fluoride
Why is there no fluoride in bioXtra® gel?

•    To ensure bioXtra® Moisturising Gel is completely safe to swallow and to enable sufferers to apply bioXtra® Moisturising Gel as often as needed, day and night.

Foaming Agents
Why does bioXtra® Mild Toothpaste not contain the foaming agent Sodium Lauryl Sulphate?

•    Studies indicate that, in susceptible mouths, the presence of the foaming agent Sodium Lauryl Sulphate can increase the incidence of mouth ulcers. In dry mouth sufferers where the likelihood of mouth ulcers is increased, this problem can be avoided by using bioXtra® Mild Toothpaste routinely. (1)

•    In laboratory tests, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate has also been shown to inhibit the enzyme activity in bioXtra® formulations.

Glucose Oxidase
Is Glucose Oxidase a sugar?

•    No, it’s an enzyme!
•    bioXtra® products contain all the components needed to activate the anti-bacterial Salivary Peroxidase System in the mouth.
•    Glucose Oxidase is one of these components .

Lactoferrin
What is Lactoferrin?

•    Lactoferrin is present in human secretion liquids, including saliva and gingival fluid
•    Lactoferrin is one of the most important naturally occurring antimicrobial agents in the mouth, binding with iron molecules which bacteria would otherwise use to assist their growth.
•    It works in close conjunction with lysozyme to regulate conditions in the mouth.

Lysozyme
What is Lysozyme?

•    Lysozyme is an enzyme found in all human secretion liquids.  It is able to break down bacteria cell walls, causing them to die.  In saliva its function is to control harmful bacteria without affecting healthy bacteria.  In this way it helps to maintain a healthy oral environment.
•    Lysozyme is also known to have an anti-fungal effect helping to prevent Candida Albicans (oral thrush)

Method of use
How do I use the bioXtra® Oral Care Programme?

•    Follow the simple daily 3-step programme for improved oral health and freshness:
•    Step 1:  brush with bioXtra® Mild Toothpaste after meals
•    Step 2: Rinse with bioXtra® Alcohol-free Rinse
•    Step 3: Apply bioXtra® Gel spray for daytime lubrication and comfort.  At night, apply bioXtra Moisturising Gel for a long-lasting relief from oral dryness.
•    For saliva stimulation suck bioXtra® Tablets or chew bioXtra® Non-stick chewing-gum.

Method of use
Is it necessary to rinse with water after brushing the teeth with bioXtra® Mild Toothpaste?

•    It is recommended to rinse the mouth with bioXtra® Alcohol-free Mouthrinse in order to maximise the effect of the active ingredients.
•    bioXtra® mouthrinse supplements the action of bioXtra® toothpaste, helping to control the production of acidity caused by unhealthy bacteria and create a healthy pH in the mouth.
•    If bioXtra® Alcohol-free Mouthrinse is not used, it is recommended to rinse with a minimum amount of water in order to allow bioXtra® Mild Toothpaste to remain around the teeth and on the gums.

Milk products
As some of the ingredients are by-products of milk could there be a problem with BSE?

•    No!  The products hold a certificate of verification that the milk used is from animals free from BSE.

Other Enzyme toothpastes
Is bioXtra® Mild Toothpaste any different to other enzyme toothpastes?

•    Some enzyme toothpastes need saliva to produce the Salivary Peroxidase System.
•    In a healthy mouth these products may assist in boosting the Salivary Peroxidase System, but in dry mouths they are not recommended.
•    bioXtra®\'s unique patented action is the result of years of research and development by specialists, and is an advance in caring for dry mouths naturally, safely and effectively.

Recommended usage
Can the bioXtra® products be used long term?

•    Because bioXtra replicates the natural activity of saliva and contains no antibiotics or other strong chemicals, it is suitable and recommended for regular long-term use, in order to help maintain oral health.
•    bioXtra® can also be used as a daily prevention in mouths with a normal saliva flow.

Sorbitol
Is Sorbitol a sugar?

•    No. Sorbitol is a naturally occurring sweetener used in drinks and confectionery in place of sugar (sucrose). It is a non-active ingredient in some bioXtra® products and is used as a binding agent

Sorbitol
Can the ingestion of Sorbitol cause diarrhoea?

•    Large quantities of sorbitol have been shown to cause diarrhoea, but to have this effect you would need to swallow 20 - 50 gms per day - the equivalent of a full tube of toothpaste!

The Salivary Peroxidase System
How does it work?

•    A combination of factors in saliva, including the enzyme - lactoperoxidase - activate a reaction which produces saliva\'s natural antibacterial agent -  hypothiocyanite .
•    In the mouth, this agent is essential for inhibiting the bacteria which can lead to a reduction in oral health.
•    In healthy mouths with a normal saliva flow, this antibacterial agent is continuously working to protect the mouth, and the whole body from harmful micro-organisms.

Xylitol
What is Xylitol, and is it true that Xylitol has a beneficial effect?

•    Xylitol is a naturally occurring sweetener found in berries, fruits and mushrooms.  It also occurs in small quantities in the human body.
•    Xylitol is useful and suitable in dental products because it reduces plaque formation and has been shown in numerous studies to actively help prevent the development of dental caries.
•     Xylitol has also been shown to stimulate the flow of saliva.
